It is not a \u201clack of character\u201d but a biopsychosocial disorder that changes brain homeostasis, emotional regulation, and behavioral patterns.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"2257\">A person with alcohol dependence cannot control drinking even when it already causes serious physical, psychological, family, and financial harm. It is a combination of:<br data-start=\"2134\" data-end=\"2137\" \/>\u2022 neurobiology,<br data-start=\"2152\" data-end=\"2155\" \/>\u2022 psychological mechanisms,<br data-start=\"2182\" data-end=\"2185\" \/>\u2022 past trauma,<br data-start=\"2199\" data-end=\"2202\" \/>\u2022 family models,<br data-start=\"2218\" data-end=\"2221\" \/>\u2022 and strongly conditioned behavior.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2264\" data-end=\"2283\">Case Example:\u00a0<em>A 42-year-old successful professional says, \u201cI only drink in the evenings to relax.\u201d After one month of therapy, it becomes clear that he drinks almost an entire bottle of wine every night, has begun hiding empty bottles, and lies to his wife. He feels guilty but says: <\/em><em>\u201cWhen I enter the house at night, I am so tense that my body automatically reaches for the glass.\u201d<\/em><br data-start=\"2655\" data-end=\"2658\" \/><em>This is a classic example of a conditioned reaction.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"2717\" data-end=\"2781\"><strong data-start=\"2719\" data-end=\"2781\">NEUROBIOLOGICAL MECHANISMS \u2014 HOW THE BRAIN LOCKS THE CYCLE<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 data-start=\"2783\" data-end=\"2810\"><strong data-start=\"2786\" data-end=\"2810\">1. The Dopamine Trap<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2812\" data-end=\"2993\">Alcohol sharply increases dopamine levels \u2192 the body relaxes \u2192 the brain stores this as a \u201cquick fix.\u201d<br data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2917\" \/>Over time, the brain begins to demand repetition to achieve the same relief.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2995\" data-end=\"3155\"><strong data-start=\"2995\" data-end=\"3007\">Example: <\/strong>A person who drinks \u201cto fall asleep\u201d may, after six months, be unable to sleep without alcohol because the brain has changed its natural balance.<\/p>\n<hr data-start=\"3157\" data-end=\"3160\" \/>\n<h3 data-start=\"3162\" data-end=\"3207\"><strong data-start=\"3165\" data-end=\"3207\">2. Tolerance \u2192 Withdrawal \u2192 Dependence<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3407\"><strong data-start=\"3209\" data-end=\"3223\">Tolerance:<\/strong> the need for more alcohol.<br data-start=\"3250\" data-end=\"3253\" \/><strong data-start=\"3253\" data-end=\"3268\">Withdrawal:<\/strong> trembling, anxiety, irritability, heart palpitations when stopping.<br data-start=\"3336\" data-end=\"3339\" \/><strong data-start=\"3339\" data-end=\"3354\">Dependence:<\/strong> drinking becomes \u201cnecessary\u201d for normal functioning.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3414\" data-end=\"3441\"><strong data-start=\"3416\" data-end=\"3441\">PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3443\" data-end=\"3642\">Alcohol often begins as a \u201csolution,\u201d not a \u201cproblem.\u201d<br data-start=\"3497\" data-end=\"3500\" \/>It is used to:<br data-start=\"3514\" data-end=\"3517\" \/>\u2022 numb anxiety,<br data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3535\" \/>\u2022 replace missing emotional closeness,<br data-start=\"3573\" data-end=\"3576\" \/>\u2022 avoid conflict,<br data-start=\"3593\" data-end=\"3596\" \/>\u2022 silence the inner critic,<br data-start=\"3623\" data-end=\"3626\" \/>\u2022 manage stress.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3644\" data-end=\"3734\"><strong data-start=\"3644\" data-end=\"3660\">The pattern: <\/strong>\u201cI drink because I can\u2019t cope \u2013 and then I can\u2019t cope because I drink.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3736\" data-end=\"3938\"><strong data-start=\"3736\" data-end=\"3748\">Example: <\/strong>A 35-year-old woman drinks \u201conly on Fridays\u201d to \u201cswitch off exhaustion.\u201d After one year, Friday becomes Friday + Saturday. Then Wednesday \u201cto fall asleep.\u201d She no longer controls her use.<\/p>\n<h1 data-start=\"3945\" data-end=\"3969\"><strong data-start=\"3947\" data-end=\"3969\">SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1689\" src=\"https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-688x1030.jpg 688w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-1025x1536.jpg 1025w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-1367x2048.jpg 1367w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-1001x1500.jpg 1001w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-471x705.jpg 471w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-1-scaled.jpg 1709w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"3971\" data-end=\"3991\"><strong data-start=\"3974\" data-end=\"3991\">Hidden Signs:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3992\" data-end=\"4343\">\u2022 Buying alcohol secretly<br data-start=\"4017\" data-end=\"4020\" \/>\u2022 Inventing excuses<br data-start=\"4039\" data-end=\"4042\" \/>\u2022 Emotional outbursts<br data-start=\"4063\" data-end=\"4066\" \/>\u2022 Avoiding social events<br data-start=\"4090\" data-end=\"4093\" \/>\u2022 Hidden drinking, controlling amounts<br data-start=\"4131\" data-end=\"4134\" \/>\u2022 Memory loss (blackouts)<br data-start=\"4159\" data-end=\"4162\" \/>\u2022 Irritability when not drinking<br data-start=\"4194\" data-end=\"4197\" \/>\u2022 Increasing tolerance<br data-start=\"4219\" data-end=\"4222\" \/>\u2022 Problems in family, work, and health<br data-start=\"4260\" data-end=\"4263\" \/>\u2022 Self-blame and double thinking (\u201cI am doing this to myself but I cannot stop\u201d)<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4345\" data-end=\"4371\"><strong data-start=\"4348\" data-end=\"4369\">Functional Signs:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4372\" data-end=\"4460\">The so-called \u201cfunctioning alcoholic\u201d: behaves normally in public but collapses at home.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4467\" data-end=\"4528\"><strong data-start=\"4469\" data-end=\"4528\">THE CYCLE OF ADDICTION \u2014 FULL EXPLANATION WITH EXAMPLES<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4530\" data-end=\"4650\">This is a typical emotional-behavioral cycle observed in all forms of addiction \u2014 alcohol, drugs, gambling, pornography.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4657\" data-end=\"4683\"><strong data-start=\"4660\" data-end=\"4683\">TENSION BUILD-UP<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4685\" data-end=\"4809\">This is the initial phase. Internal tension builds up which the dependent person cannot regulate maturely. It may come from:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4811\" data-end=\"4955\">\u2022 work stress<br data-start=\"4824\" data-end=\"4827\" \/>\u2022 conflict<br data-start=\"4837\" data-end=\"4840\" \/>\u2022 feeling of failure<br data-start=\"4860\" data-end=\"4863\" \/>\u2022 loneliness<br data-start=\"4875\" data-end=\"4878\" \/>\u2022 shame<br data-start=\"4885\" data-end=\"4888\" \/>\u2022 inner criticism<br data-start=\"4905\" data-end=\"4908\" \/>\u2022 unresolved emotions<br data-start=\"4929\" data-end=\"4932\" \/>\u2022 physical exhaustion<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4957\" data-end=\"5115\"><strong data-start=\"4957\" data-end=\"4974\">How it looks:<\/strong><br data-start=\"4974\" data-end=\"4977\" \/>A person becomes irritable, anxious, withdrawn, tense. Thoughts appear:<br data-start=\"5048\" data-end=\"5051\" \/>\u201cI want to switch off,\u201d<br data-start=\"5074\" data-end=\"5077\" \/>\u201cI can\u2019t take it,\u201d<br data-start=\"5095\" data-end=\"5098\" \/>\u201cI need a break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5117\" data-end=\"5390\"><strong data-start=\"5117\" data-end=\"5129\">Example: <\/strong>A man comes home after a stressful day. He feels unappreciated at work, fears a conversation with his partner, and has intense internal tension. His body knows he will drink even before entering the house. The brain has learned: \u201cAlcohol will switch me off.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5397\" data-end=\"5429\"><strong data-start=\"5400\" data-end=\"5429\">ALCOHOL \u2192 SHORT RELIEF<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5431\" data-end=\"5503\">When a person drinks, tension drops sharply. Alcohol temporarily blocks:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5505\" data-end=\"5573\">\u2022 anxiety<br data-start=\"5514\" data-end=\"5517\" \/>\u2022 self-criticism<br data-start=\"5533\" data-end=\"5536\" \/>\u2022 negative thoughts<br data-start=\"5555\" data-end=\"5558\" \/>\u2022 social fear<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5575\" data-end=\"5623\">Here the brain receives the \u201creward\u201d \u2192 dopamine.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5625\" data-end=\"5719\"><strong data-start=\"5625\" data-end=\"5640\">The effect:<\/strong><br data-start=\"5640\" data-end=\"5643\" \/>\u2022 relief<br data-start=\"5651\" data-end=\"5654\" \/>\u2022 feeling of calmness<br data-start=\"5675\" data-end=\"5678\" \/>\u2022 perceived control<br data-start=\"5697\" data-end=\"5700\" \/>\u2022 \u201cbreathing space\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5721\" data-end=\"5765\">But this is short, chemical, and artificial.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5767\" data-end=\"5930\"><strong data-start=\"5767\" data-end=\"5779\">Example: <\/strong>A woman who feels tense and exhausted drinks two glasses of wine and feels the tension \u201cevaporate.\u201d This reinforces the belief:<br data-start=\"5909\" data-end=\"5912\" \/>\u201cSee? This works!\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5937\" data-end=\"5963\"><strong data-start=\"5940\" data-end=\"5963\">GUILT \u2192 PROMISES<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5965\" data-end=\"6002\">After the relief fades, guilt arises:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6004\" data-end=\"6148\">\u2022 shame<br data-start=\"6011\" data-end=\"6014\" \/>\u2022 self-criticism (\u201cWhy again?\u201d)<br data-start=\"6045\" data-end=\"6048\" \/>\u2022 self-disgust<br data-start=\"6062\" data-end=\"6065\" \/>\u2022 fear of being found out<br data-start=\"6090\" data-end=\"6093\" \/>\u2022 promises like \u201cI won\u2019t drink again starting tomorrow\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6150\" data-end=\"6289\">At this moment the dependent person sincerely believes they can stop.<br data-start=\"6219\" data-end=\"6222\" \/>But the brain has already learned a quick path to relief \u2192 alcohol.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6291\" data-end=\"6473\"><strong data-start=\"6291\" data-end=\"6303\">Example: <\/strong>After a binge, a person says: \u201cI am disgusted with myself. Never again.\u201d They even throw away the bottles. But the next day tension returns \u2192 the cycle restarts.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6480\" data-end=\"6501\"><strong data-start=\"6483\" data-end=\"6501\">NEW TENSION<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6503\" data-end=\"6590\">Guilt itself creates new tension. Additionally, dependent individuals often experience:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6592\" data-end=\"6709\">\u2022 humiliation<br data-start=\"6605\" data-end=\"6608\" \/>\u2022 fear<br data-start=\"6614\" data-end=\"6617\" \/>\u2022 thoughts like \u201cI failed\u201d<br data-start=\"6643\" data-end=\"6646\" \/>\u2022 withdrawal from loved ones<br data-start=\"6674\" data-end=\"6677\" \/>\u2022 passive aggression<br data-start=\"6697\" data-end=\"6700\" \/>\u2022 anxiety<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6711\" data-end=\"6748\">Meanwhile, external stress continues:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6750\" data-end=\"6800\">\u2022 work<br data-start=\"6756\" data-end=\"6759\" \/>\u2022 conflicts<br data-start=\"6770\" data-end=\"6773\" \/>\u2022 problems<br data-start=\"6783\" data-end=\"6786\" \/>\u2022 exhaustion<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6802\" data-end=\"6866\">This reactivates the internal feeling: \u201cI cannot handle this.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6873\" data-end=\"6889\"><strong data-start=\"6876\" data-end=\"6889\">REPEAT<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6891\" data-end=\"7051\">When tension becomes unbearable \u2192 the dependent person seeks the old \u201csolution.\u201d<br data-start=\"6971\" data-end=\"6974\" \/>Alcohol becomes the escape again.<br data-start=\"7007\" data-end=\"7010\" \/>This is the moment when the cycle closes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7053\" data-end=\"7213\"><strong data-start=\"7053\" data-end=\"7065\">Example: <\/strong>A person stays sober for three days. A difficult situation arises \u2192 the brain automatically links:<br data-start=\"7166\" data-end=\"7169\" \/>tension = drinking. And the cycle repeats.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"7053\" data-end=\"7213\"><strong data-start=\"7222\" data-end=\"7239\">Cycle Summary<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7241\" data-end=\"7411\">Addiction does NOT begin with alcohol. It begins with emotional inability to regulate tension.<br data-start=\"7337\" data-end=\"7340\" \/>Alcohol is only a tool for temporary relief \u2192 but the cost is enormous.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7241\" data-end=\"7411\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1692\" src=\"https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2-1030x687.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2-705x470.jpg 705w, https:\/\/integritherapy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/alcohol-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"7418\" data-end=\"7471\"><strong data-start=\"7420\" data-end=\"7471\">THE ROLE OF THE FAMILY \u2014 THREE CLASSIC DYNAMICS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"7473\" data-end=\"7671\">In families where there is a dependent person, the following roles almost always appear automatically. They are not \u201cbad\u201d roles but protective strategies people use to survive in a chaotic system.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"7678\" data-end=\"7701\"><strong data-start=\"7681\" data-end=\"7699\">THE RESCUER<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"7702\" data-end=\"7739\">(Justifies, covers, \u201cputs out fires\u201d)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7741\" data-end=\"7950\"><strong data-start=\"7741\" data-end=\"7761\">Characteristics:<\/strong><br data-start=\"7761\" data-end=\"7764\" \/>\u2022 justifies the dependent person<br data-start=\"7796\" data-end=\"7799\" \/>\u2022 hides the substance use<br data-start=\"7824\" data-end=\"7827\" \/>\u2022 cleans up consequences<br data-start=\"7851\" data-end=\"7854\" \/>\u2022 takes over obligations<br data-start=\"7878\" data-end=\"7881\" \/>\u2022 pays debts<br data-start=\"7893\" data-end=\"7896\" \/>\u2022 lies for them<br data-start=\"7911\" data-end=\"7914\" \/>\u2022 feels responsible to \u201csave\u201d them<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7952\" data-end=\"8171\"><strong data-start=\"7952\" data-end=\"7976\">What really happens:<\/strong><br data-start=\"7976\" data-end=\"7979\" \/>The Rescuer unintentionally prolongs the addiction because they:<br data-start=\"8043\" data-end=\"8046\" \/>\u2022 remove natural consequences<br data-start=\"8075\" data-end=\"8078\" \/>\u2022 create comfort for use<br data-start=\"8102\" data-end=\"8105\" \/>\u2022 take away the dependent person\u2019s chance to take responsibility<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8173\" data-end=\"8321\"><strong data-start=\"8173\" data-end=\"8185\">Example:<\/strong><br data-start=\"8185\" data-end=\"8188\" \/>A wife who hides traces, calls work for him, says \u201cHe is just exhausted.\u201d In reality \u2014 she prevents consequences from reaching him.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"8328\" data-end=\"8351\"><strong data-start=\"8331\" data-end=\"8349\">THE PURSUER<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"8352\" data-end=\"8384\">(Criticizes, controls, punishes)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8386\" data-end=\"8562\"><strong data-start=\"8386\" data-end=\"8406\">Characteristics:<\/strong><br data-start=\"8406\" data-end=\"8409\" \/>\u2022 constantly dissatisfied<br data-start=\"8434\" data-end=\"8437\" \/>\u2022 nags<br data-start=\"8443\" data-end=\"8446\" \/>\u2022 controls<br data-start=\"8456\" data-end=\"8459\" \/>\u2022 raises their voice<br data-start=\"8479\" data-end=\"8482\" \/>\u2022 punishes (silent treatment, controlling money)<br data-start=\"8530\" data-end=\"8533\" \/>\u2022 seeks \u201cjustice\u201d and \u201corder\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8564\" data-end=\"8774\"><strong data-start=\"8564\" data-end=\"8596\">How this affects the system:<\/strong><br data-start=\"8596\" data-end=\"8599\" \/>The Pursuer creates an atmosphere of fear which:<br data-start=\"8647\" data-end=\"8650\" \/>\u2022 increases tension in the dependent person \u2192 more use<br data-start=\"8704\" data-end=\"8707\" \/>\u2022 deepens shame<br data-start=\"8722\" data-end=\"8725\" \/>\u2022 triggers rebellion (\u201cI\u2019ll drink out of spite!\u201d)<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8776\" data-end=\"8901\"><strong data-start=\"8776\" data-end=\"8788\">Example: <\/strong>A partner says: \u201cYou are a failure!
